GCSE Revision Habits 2026: What 177 Students Taught Us
When we built PrepWise, we had theories about how GCSE students revise. A year of real usage data has confirmed some of them, demolished others, and surfaced patterns we never anticipated. This is what we found — honestly, and with caveats.
A note on sample size
PrepWise launched in alpha in early 2026. This data covers 177 registered users across a 3.5-month window — a small but real sample. We publish it because even early signals are useful to teachers and parents making decisions, not because we think it's definitive. Where the data is ambiguous we say so.
The shape of GCSE revision demand
Before looking at what students do when they revise, it's worth understanding when they search. PrepWise saw an 11-fold increase in organic search traffic between March and June 2026 — not because we changed our content dramatically, but because exam season arrived.
The pattern is clear: GCSE revision is not a year-round behaviour for most students. It's an exam-season behaviour. Traffic was negligible in March, built through April (Easter holidays — a classic revision period), peaked in May and June as papers started, then fell sharply after the final papers. This matches what every teacher knows but what most revision tools are not designed around: students don't revise in a disciplined six-month arc. They revise in frantic weeks.
Which subjects do students revise most?
Subject uptake across our 177 users, ranked by number of unique students who used PrepWise for that subject at least once.

Six things the data showed us
Biology students practise hardest
Biology had the highest quiz attempt volume of any subject — 2,135 questions across 22 students, averaging 97 questions per student. That's nearly double the maths average. Whether that reflects the breadth of the AQA Biology specification or the subject's reputation for memory-heavy content, students clearly treat it as a retrieval practice subject.
Chemistry students lean on flashcards more than quizzes
Chemistry had the highest flashcard-to-quiz ratio of any subject. Students did 150 flashcard cycles versus 1,460 quiz attempts — a very different pattern from biology. This matches what chemistry teachers tell us: the subject has a heavy terminology load (ionic equations, functional groups, bonding types) that students feel they need to memorise before they can answer application questions.
Maths is the most popular subject — but with the lowest question volume per student
More students used PrepWise for maths than any other subject (29 unique users). But their quiz volume per student was among the lowest. Our hypothesis: students use PrepWise to check understanding topic by topic, then switch to past papers. Maths revision is more exam-format-dependent than retrieval-based — students want to practise marking-scheme-style questions, not short-answer knowledge checks.
Signups cluster around specific moments — not a steady trickle
Registrations weren't evenly spread across the year. In one four-day period in late March, we saw ~35 signups — roughly 20% of our entire user base in 96 hours. We can't attribute this to a specific event (we weren't running ads), which strongly suggests word-of-mouth: one student shared it, others piled in. The pattern suggests PrepWise spreads peer-to-peer, not through broadcast channels.
Younger cohorts are arriving earlier than expected
Of our 177 registered users, 27 are studying for their 2027 GCSEs (currently Year 10) and 14 are in Year 9 or below. We launched expecting to serve 2026 students — the fact that over a quarter of our user base is a year or two away from their exams tells us students are starting to think about GCSEs far earlier than the traditional 'Year 11 Easter panic' model suggests.
After the last exam paper — activity drops to near-zero within 48 hours
In the week of GCSE exams (May–June), we saw clearly exam-driven spikes in both signups and revision activity — students arriving the night before each paper. After the final science paper on June 16th, activity fell sharply. This is expected but it reinforces a design problem we're working on: PrepWise is currently too heavily positioned as an emergency tool rather than a long-term revision habit.
How students search during exam season
Google Search Console data from our 132,000 impressions in the 90 days to June 2026 reveals something consistent: students don't search broadly. They search for specific things they're stuck on, often the night before or morning of an exam.

The practical implication for teachers: “have you revised electricity?” is not how students experience their knowledge gaps. They experience them as “I can't remember how to rearrange the kinetic energy equation.” Tools and resources that match this specificity — topic-level, not subject-level — are what students reach for.
What this means for teachers and parents
Over 40 students in our cohort are in Year 10 or below. Early starters who build retrieval practice habits before the final year perform differently — the content sticks because it's been revisited.
Students themselves signal this — they do more retrieval practice in biology than any other subject. If you teach biology, the data suggests your students know they need to quiz themselves, and they will if given the tool.
April saw 5x the search traffic of March. The Easter holiday is when students actually sit down and work. Setting concrete tasks for that window — not just 'revise Unit 3' — makes the difference.
Physics had the lowest question-attempts-per-student of any science. Students tend to re-read notes and practise calculations instead. But calculation errors often mask knowledge gaps that retrieval practice would catch.
What we're building next
This data shapes what we build. Three things stand out:
- 1Onboarding that builds a habit from day one — half of students who set up an account haven't touched a subject yet. That's the problem we're most focused on solving before September.
- 2Better physics coverage — not just questions, but worked-example-style explanations that help students connect equations to concepts.
- 3A Year 10 start path — designed for students who want to build a two-year revision foundation rather than cramming in Year 11.
