DateEvent

Sept-Dec 1931Japan invades and conquers Manchuria

Oct 1933Lytton Report condemns Japan. Japan walks out of League.
1933-37Japan expands further into northern China

💥 Why the League Failed

  • Too slow: Lytton Commission took a YEAR to investigate. Japan had conquered Manchuria before report was finished!
  • Economic sanctions weak: USA wasn't in League and wouldn't support sanctions. Japan could trade with America.
  • No military action: Britain and France wouldn't risk war with Japan. Both had Asian colonies to protect.
  • Too far away: Manchuria was on the other side of the world. Nobody wanted to send troops that far.
  • Depression distracted: Great Depression meant countries focused on own problems, not international crises.
  • Self-interest: Britain and France traded with Japan. Didn't want to upset a powerful country.
