📌 Quadrats

A quadrat is a square frame (usually 0.5m × 0.5m = 0.25m²) used to sample an area:

  • Place quadrats randomly using random number generators for coordinates
  • Count organisms in each quadrat (or estimate % cover for plants)
  • Calculate mean number per quadrat
  • Scale up: Population = mean × (total area ÷ quadrat area)
