The GCSE Biology exam is split across two papers. Paper 1 typically covers cell biology, organisation, infection, and bioenergetics. Four things that win marks in Biology
GCSE Biology rewards precise recall and clear application. Re-reading notes barely moves either. These four habits target exactly where Biology marks are won and lost.
Draw and label the diagrams examiners ask for
Biology is the most visual GCSE science, and diagrams are worth real marks. Practise drawing and labelling cell structures (plant vs animal), the reflex arc, the nephron, the heart chambers, and the structure of a leaf — from memory, without looking. If your child can produce a clean, labelled diagram in two minutes, they will pick up 3–4 marks that students who only read their notes will drop every time.
Learn definitions word for word — Biology doesn't forgive paraphrasing
AQA, Edexcel, and OCR mark schemes are unforgiving on key term definitions. 'Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration through a partially permeable membrane' earns the mark. 'Osmosis is when water moves' does not. The 20 or so definitions that come up most often — active transport, mitosis, homeostasis, natural selection, osmosis, enzyme, antibody — are worth drilling to exact wording, not approximate meaning.
Know the method, variables, and evaluation for each required practical
AQA lists 10 required practicals that can appear directly in any exam question — including the osmosis investigation using potato cylinders, the enzyme rate experiment changing pH with amylase and starch, and the fermentation practical using yeast and glucose. Examiners test which variable was changed (independent), what was measured (dependent), what was controlled, how anomalies were handled, and how you would improve accuracy. Knowing the biology isn't enough — know the method.
Read command words and write to them — 'describe' and 'explain' are different marks
The single most common mark-loss in GCSE Biology is answering the wrong question. 'Describe' means state what happens — no explanation needed. 'Explain' means give the reason, using 'because' or 'this means that'. In a 6-mark extended response on glucose regulation or the reflex arc, examiners follow a detailed mark scheme — list facts in bullet points and you'll score 2 or 3; build a logical chain of cause and effect and you'll score 5 or 6.

How to revise Biology
Consistency beats cramming. A realistic routine — even 20–30 minutes a day — will take you much further than an all-nighter the week before.
Draw diagrams from memory
GCSE Biology is visual. Practise drawing and labelling cells, the heart, the nervous system pathway, and DNA replication from memory. If you can draw it and label it without looking, you understand it. Examiners frequently ask for labelled diagrams worth 3-4 marks.
Explain processes in steps
Break every biological process into numbered steps. For example, 'describe how a reflex arc works' should be: 1) stimulus detected by receptor, 2) electrical impulse along sensory neurone, 3) relay neurone in spinal cord, 4) motor neurone, 5) effector responds. This step-by-step approach is exactly what mark schemes reward.
Link topics together
GCSE Biology topics overlap heavily. Photosynthesis connects to ecosystems and food chains. Enzymes connect to digestion and metabolism. The nervous system connects to homeostasis. Making these links helps you answer application questions where knowledge from multiple topics is needed.
Use flashcards for key terms
Biology has more specialist vocabulary than any other GCSE science. Words like mitosis, osmosis, homeostasis, and phagocytosis must be spelled correctly and defined precisely. Spaced repetition flashcards are the most efficient way to lock these in long-term.

- In 6-mark questions, listing facts instead of building a logical explanation with connectives like 'this means that' and 'as a result'.
- Mixing up mitosis (growth, 2 identical cells) and meiosis (gametes, 4 different cells).

Most of Year 9 Biology is spent on cells, organisation, and bioenergetics — the topics that underpin the rest of the course. Success this year means your child can explain why cells are specialised, how enzymes work, and what photosynthesis and respiration actually do, rather than just recite the equations.
Start with cell structure — animal, plant, and bacterial cells. This comes up in every Biology exam in some form, and understanding it makes organ systems, infection, and genetics much easier later. After cells, focus on understanding enzymes deeply: what they do, how temperature and pH change their shape, and why that matters. These two topics alone underpin roughly a third of the whole GCSE course.

Build a glossary as you cover each topic
Every new Biology topic introduces 10–15 specialist terms. Write a definition in your own words for each one as you go — don't wait until Year 11 to learn what 'mitosis', 'diffusion', or 'chloroplast' means. A running glossary you add to through Year 9 saves enormous time later.

Sketch key diagrams weekly from memory
At the end of each week, close your book and draw the cell structures you've covered — plant cell, animal cell, bacterial cell — and label every part. This is not about being artistic. It's about forcing your brain to retrieve what it learned rather than just re-reading it.

Master the photosynthesis and respiration equations
Both equations appear on both exam papers, often in questions that require you to explain what each reactant and product is for. Learn them now — carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen for photosynthesis; glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water for aerobic respiration. Know the word equations and, for Higher tier, the symbol equations.

Not a marathon session — just 10 questions on that day's content before you put your book away. At this stage, you're training retrieval habits, not cramming for exams. Ten questions a day across the school year is worth more than any revision session in Year 11.

Year 11 — Autumn term
September — DecemberBy now you've covered most of the GCSE Biology specification. Start connecting topics together — for example, how enzymes link to digestion, which links to food tests. Begin doing past paper questions by topic (not full papers yet). Focus on Paper 2 topics as they're taught, but keep reviewing Paper 1 material weekly. Create revision cards for key definitions, processes, and required practical methods.
ParentsAsk your child to explain one Biology topic to you over dinner this week — pick something random from their specification, like 'how does the immune system respond to a new infection?' or 'what does the nervous system do?' If they can explain it in plain English to a non-expert, they understand it. If they reach for their notes or say 'it's complicated', they're not there yet.
6 months before exams
December — JanuaryThis is when serious GCSE Biology revision should begin. Work through every topic systematically and rate your confidence. Spend extra time on weak areas — if you can't explain a process to someone else, you don't understand it well enough. Start practising 6-mark extended-response questions, as these are where many students lose marks. Learn the command words: 'describe' means say what happens, 'explain' means say why it happens.
ParentsHelp your child make a simple traffic-light chart — one line per Biology topic, coloured red, amber, or green for how confident they feel. Then check in fortnightly to see whether the reds are turning amber. You don't need to know the topics; you just need to notice if the same ones are still red three weeks later and ask what's getting in the way.
Mock exams
January — FebruaryYour mock exams are the most valuable GCSE Biology revision tool you'll get. Do them under timed conditions and then go through every mark you dropped. The questions you got wrong in mocks are exactly what to focus on for the next three months. Parents: don't panic about mock results — they're a diagnostic tool, not a prediction. Ask your child which topics they found hardest, not what grade they got.
ParentsWhen mock results come back, ask your child to show you the paper and point out two or three questions they think they could answer better now. Don't focus on the overall grade — focus on what the paper revealed. A mock that surfaces three weak topics in January is a gift, not a failure, and the conversation is more useful than any reassurance you can offer.
3 months before exams
March — AprilNow shift your GCSE Biology revision to exam technique. Do full past papers under timed conditions every week. Focus on the 15% of marks that come from maths: practise magnification calculations, percentage change, mean and standard deviation. Review all 10 required practicals (AQA) — know the method, variables, and how to evaluate results. Use spaced repetition for definitions and key terms you keep forgetting.
ParentsAsk your child to label a blank diagram from memory — search 'blank cell diagram GCSE' or 'blank heart diagram GCSE' and print one out. Sit with them for five minutes while they label it without looking at their notes, then check together whether the labels are correct. It takes ten minutes, it's genuinely useful, and it doesn't require you to know any Biology.
Final weeks
May — exam dayIn the final weeks of GCSE Biology revision, focus on active recall — not re-reading notes. Test yourself daily with flashcards and past paper questions. Prioritise topics with the highest exam frequency (cell transport, homeostasis, inheritance) but don't neglect ecology and evolution, which students often revise last and score worst on. The night before: read through your key equations and required practical summaries, then get a proper night's sleep.
ParentsIn the final week, your most useful role is logistics, not revision help. Make sure the evening before each exam is calm and screen-light — dinner together, an early finish, nothing that disrupts sleep. Ask them what time they need to leave, what they're not allowed in the exam, and whether they have water. The Biology is in their head. Your job is to make sure they arrive rested and on time.

A note for parents
