Fever Response

Fever is a systemic response that creates an environment hostile to pathogens while enhancing immune function:

Mechanism of Fever

  • Pyrogen release: Macrophages release fever-inducing chemicals (pyrogens)
  • Hypothalamus reset: Brain's thermostat is reset to higher temperature
  • Heat generation: Shivering and metabolic changes increase body temperature
  • Heat conservation: Blood vessels in skin constrict to retain heat

Benefits of Fever

  • Pathogen inhibition: Many bacteria and viruses cannot survive at higher temperatures
  • Enhanced immune function: White blood cells work more efficiently at higher temperatures
  • Reduced iron availability: Iron sequestration starves bacteria of essential nutrient
  • Increased metabolism: Faster immune responses and tissue repair

Quick Recall Flashcards

What is sebum?
An oily substance produced by sebaceous glands in the skin that creates an acidic environment on the skin surface, inhibiting bacterial and fungal growth.
What is phagocytosis?
The process by which white blood cells (phagocytes) engulf and digest pathogens or foreign particles.
