How to revise GCSE Chemistry

A complete plan for revising GCSE Chemistry — what actually wins marks, a stage-by-stage timeline from Year 10 to exam day, and tips for parents along the way.

GCSE Chemistry revision spans the entire material world — from atomic structure and bonding to organic chemistry and chemical analysis. You'll need to understand why reactions happen, how to predict products, calculate masses, and interpret experimental data. It's one of the most interconnected GCSE subjects: understanding bonding helps you understand properties, which helps you understand reactions.

The GCSE Chemistry exam is split into two papers. Paper 1 covers atomic structure, bonding, quantitative chemistry, chemical changes, and energy changes. Paper 2 covers rates of reaction, organic chemistry, chemical analysis, the atmosphere, and using resources. Both papers test recall, application, and extended writing.

Around 20% of GCSE Chemistry marks come from mathematical skills — more than Biology. You'll need to calculate relative formula mass, work out moles, balance equations, and interpret rate graphs. Students who practise the maths consistently outperform those who focus only on theory. Equation practice is non-negotiable for GCSE Chemistry revision.

Four things that win marks in Chemistry

GCSE Chemistry rewards precise recall and clear application. Re-reading notes barely moves either. These four habits target exactly where Chemistry marks are won and lost.

The maths inside Chemistry

Lock down the mole calculation first

Around 15–20% of Chemistry paper marks require calculation — moles (n = mass ÷ Mr), percentage yield, atom economy, and concentration (c = n ÷ V). Students who cannot rearrange n = mass ÷ Mr reliably under exam conditions consistently drop a grade. The fix is deliberate practice on these four calculation types before moving on to anything else — not because they are the most interesting part of Chemistry, but because they are the most consistent mark-losers.

The reaction bank

Build a bank of reaction types, not just equations

Knowing "methane burns to give CO₂ and water" is not enough — examiners ask why combustion is exothermic (bond breaking vs bond forming), what a complete vs incomplete combustion product is, and how to write the balanced equation with state symbols. A usable reaction bank covers combustion, neutralisation (including the ionic equation H⁺ + OH⁻ → H₂O), displacement in metals and halogens, electrolysis (which ion discharges at each electrode and why), and reduction/oxidation in terms of electron transfer. For each type, your child should be able to write the equation, name the energy change, and explain the mechanism — that is what examiners reward.

Required practicals

Practicals are examined on paper — the variables, not the technique

AQA's 10 required practicals include making salts by titration, rates of reaction investigations (temperature, concentration, surface area), paper chromatography, and flame tests. Edexcel and OCR have equivalent core practicals. On the written paper, examiners test whether your child can identify the independent variable, the dependent variable, and all control variables for an experiment — not whether they remember which colour lithium gives. The most common drop: students describe what they did in the practical rather than justifying why each variable was controlled. Practising with past-paper practical questions (rather than just repeating the method) fixes this.

Mark scheme literacy

Read the mark scheme — Chemistry rewards specific words

"Electrostatic attraction" scores; "the charges pull together" often does not. "Delocalised electrons" scores for metallic bonding; "free electrons" is marginal depending on the board. AQA mark schemes frequently flag "ionic equation required for full marks" on neutralisation questions — students who write the full formula equation lose those marks even with correct chemistry. The most useful revision habit is comparing a written answer word-by-word against the mark scheme, not just checking whether the general idea matches.

How to revise Chemistry

Consistency beats cramming. A realistic routine — even 20–30 minutes a day — will take you much further than an all-nighter the week before.

Master the maths early

GCSE Chemistry calculations follow patterns. Learn the formula triangles for moles, concentration, and rate. Practise converting units (g to kg, cm³ to dm³). Do 5 calculation questions every revision session — the exam will have 8-12 marks of pure calculation, and these are the most reliable marks to pick up.

Build a reaction bank

Create a reference sheet of every type of reaction: acid + metal, acid + carbonate, acid + alkali, oxidation, reduction, displacement, decomposition. For each, know the word equation, balanced symbol equation, and an example. This single sheet covers a huge portion of the GCSE Chemistry specification.

Use past paper mark schemes as a revision tool

Mark schemes show you exactly what examiners want. Read the mark scheme for a 6-mark question before attempting it — you'll learn the expected structure. Then try similar questions without the mark scheme. GCSE Chemistry mark schemes are very precise about wording, especially for definitions.

Practise required practicals as written descriptions

You won't repeat the practicals in the exam, but you'll answer questions about them. For each practical, write out: aim, equipment list, method (step-by-step), independent/dependent/control variables, how to make it a fair test, and how to improve accuracy. This covers the practical skills that account for around 15% of marks.

Mistakes to avoid

Most lost revision time comes down to a handful of habits. Steer clear of these and you'll get far more out of every session.

Common traps
  • Writing 'atoms share electrons' for ionic bonding — ionic bonding involves electron TRANSFER. Sharing is covalent.
  • Forgetting state symbols in equations. Markers specifically look for (s), (l), (g), and (aq) in GCSE Chemistry papers.
  • Confusing exothermic and endothermic — exothermic releases energy (temperature rises), endothermic absorbs energy (temperature falls).
  • In electrolysis, mixing up what happens at the anode vs cathode. Remember OILRIG: Oxidation Is Loss (anode), Reduction Is Gain (cathode).
  • Leaving calculation answers without units or to the wrong number of significant figures.

Build the foundations — atoms, bonding, the periodic table

Most schools start GCSE Chemistry content in Year 9 with atomic structure, elements, and ionic and covalent bonding. Getting these right now means everything in Years 10 and 11 makes sense.

Where to start

Start with atomic structure — protons, neutrons, electrons, atomic number, mass number. Everything else in the course builds on this. If your child is uncertain about what an ion is, that is the gap to close first.

How to build up
  1. 1

    Understand the atom

    Make sure your child can draw a simple atom, label the subatomic particles, and explain what atomic number and mass number mean. This is the entry point for ionic bonding, isotopes, and later for electrolysis.

  2. 2

    Learn ionic and covalent bonding

    These are the two bonding types examined most heavily. Ionic bonding — metal donates electrons to non-metal, forming oppositely charged ions held by electrostatic attraction. Covalent bonding — non-metals share pairs of electrons. Dot-and-cross diagrams are examined directly.

  3. 3

    Use the periodic table actively

    The periodic table is given in the exam, but students still need to know what group number tells you (number of outer electrons), what period number tells you (number of electron shells), and why elements in the same group have similar properties.

  4. 4

    Start a formula reference list

    Begin writing down chemical formulas as they appear — H₂O, NaCl, CO₂, H₂SO₄, NaOH. Examiners expect correct formulas in equations. Building this list gradually through Year 9 saves a lot of cramming in Year 11.

The full path from the start of the course to exam day — what to focus on at each stage, and a tip for parents along the way.

  1. Year 10

    September — July

    Start GCSE Chemistry revision habits from the beginning. After each lesson, write out the key equations and definitions. Year 10 typically covers atomic structure, bonding, and quantitative chemistry — these are the foundations everything else builds on. If you don't understand ionic and covalent bonding by the end of Year 10, everything in Year 11 will be harder. Parents: check your child can balance simple equations and draw dot-and-cross diagrams. These are fundamental skills.

    Parents

    Ask your child to tell you what an ionic bond is and what holds it together. If they can explain it clearly in one sentence — "oppositely charged ions attracted to each other" — that foundation is solid. If they struggle, bonding is worth addressing now before Year 11 content layers on top of it.

  2. Year 11 — Autumn term

    September — December

    Year 11 brings the harder GCSE Chemistry topics: organic chemistry, rates, equilibrium, and chemical analysis. Keep reviewing Paper 1 material while learning Paper 2 content. Start building an equations sheet — you'll need to recall formulas for moles, concentration, and rate calculations. Do 10 minutes of equation balancing practice every day; it sounds boring but it's worth 5-10 marks across both papers.

    Parents

    Ask your child to write out the formula for calculating moles (n = mass ÷ Mr) and use it to find the number of moles in 36g of water (Mr = 18). The answer is 2 moles. If they cannot do this in two minutes without looking it up, the mole calculation needs focused attention — it appears on every Chemistry paper.

  3. 6 months before exams

    December — January

    Audit every topic on the GCSE Chemistry specification. Rate each one red/amber/green and spend 70% of your revision time on reds. Make sure you understand electrolysis, organic reactions, and equilibrium — these are the topics most students struggle with. Start doing past paper questions by topic, marking them yourself using the mark scheme. Learn what examiners actually want — it's often not what you'd expect.

    Parents

    Ask to see a completed past-paper mark scheme next to your child's answers for one question. Look for whether their answers use the specific words the mark scheme requires — "delocalised electrons" rather than "free electrons", "electrostatic attraction" rather than "the charges pull". This comparison habit is one of the most effective things a Chemistry student can do at this stage.

  4. Mock exams

    January — February

    Mock exams reveal exactly where your GCSE Chemistry revision gaps are. After mocks, go through every question you dropped marks on and categorise why: was it knowledge, calculation, or exam technique? If you lost marks on moles calculations, you need to practise the formula triangle until it's automatic. If you lost marks on 6-mark questions, practise structuring answers with a clear opening statement, evidence, and conclusion.

    Parents

    After mock results come back, ask your child to write a list of the three topic areas where they dropped the most marks. Those three topics — not a general "revise Chemistry" plan — should be the focus of the next few weeks. If they do not have that list, ask them to go through the mock paper with the mark scheme and make it.

  5. 3 months before exams

    March — April

    Do one full GCSE Chemistry past paper per week under timed conditions. Focus on the calculation questions — work out moles, mass, concentration, and atom economy until the methods are second nature. Review all required practicals: know the equipment, method, variables, and how to evaluate results. Practise writing balanced symbol equations including state symbols — markers are strict about this.

    Parents

    Check whether your child knows the required practicals by asking them to name one thing that was kept constant in a rates of reaction experiment they did in class (a control variable). If they cannot name any control variables — only what they changed and what they measured — that is the gap the examiners test on the practical questions.

  6. Final weeks

    May — exam day

    Final GCSE Chemistry revision should focus on active recall. Test yourself on key reactions (acids + metals, acids + carbonates, neutralisation), organic homologous series, and tests for ions and gases. Don't forget the atmospheric chemistry section — it's a small topic but frequently examined. Make sure you know flame test colours, gas tests (limewater, splint, litmus), and chromatography Rf calculations. These are reliable marks if you've practised them.

    Parents

    Ask your child to write the ionic equation for a neutralisation reaction: H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l). If they write the full formula equation instead, they have found a gap worth one or two marks on the paper — and it takes twenty minutes to fix.

A note for parents

GCSE Chemistry is the science subject where regular practice matters most. Even 15 minutes of equation balancing or calculation practice daily makes a measurable difference over a term.

Ask your child to explain bonding to you using real objects — salt for ionic, water for covalent. If they can't explain why table salt dissolves in water but diamond doesn't, they have a bonding gap to fill.

If your child finds Chemistry the hardest of the three sciences, they're not alone — it's consistently the lowest-scoring GCSE science nationally. The key is not to give up on the calculation topics, which is where most marks are lost.

Check that your child has a complete set of equations and definitions. Many schools provide a revision booklet — if not, the exam board specification lists every required equation and definition for free.
