How to revise GCSE Maths

A complete plan for revising GCSE Maths — what actually wins marks, a stage-by-stage timeline from Year 10 to exam day, and tips for parents along the way.

GCSE Maths revision is unique because the exam tests problem-solving, not just procedures. You can't just memorise methods — you need to recognise which method applies to unfamiliar problems. The specification covers number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry, probability, and statistics, with questions designed to combine topics in unexpected ways.

GCSE Maths has three papers: Paper 1 is non-calculator (1 hour 30 minutes), Papers 2 and 3 are calculator papers (each 1 hour 30 minutes). Each paper is worth 80 marks. The content is the same across all three papers — any topic can appear on any paper. Foundation tier covers grades 1-5, Higher tier covers grades 4-9.

The most important GCSE Maths revision skill is practice under timed conditions. Unlike other GCSEs where you can 'learn content', Maths requires you to develop fluency through repetition. Students who do 20 minutes of daily practice consistently outperform those who cram for 4 hours the weekend before an exam.

Four things that win marks in Maths

GCSE Maths rewards precise recall and clear application. Re-reading notes barely moves either. These four habits target exactly where Maths marks are won and lost.

The single biggest mark saver

Write your working — every step, every time

GCSE Maths mark schemes award method marks (M marks) separately from accuracy marks (A marks). That means a student who sets up the correct method but makes an arithmetic slip can still collect 2 out of 3 marks — or 3 out of 4. But only if the working is on the page. An answer-only approach, even a correct one, earns zero M marks and leaves no margin for error. On 5-mark and 6-mark questions there are also Quality of Written Communication marks (QWC on AQA, called 'communication marks' on OCR) for setting work out clearly with correct notation. The habit to build: write the formula first, substitute values second, calculate third. If your child is in the habit of doing it all in their head and writing the answer, a Paper 2 or Paper 3 with a tricky calculator question will cost them more marks than they expect.

Non-calculator fluency is its own skill — and it needs its own practice

Paper 1 (non-calculator) is 80 marks on AQA and Edexcel — a third of the entire GCSE. The topics that regularly trip students up without a calculator are: adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, long multiplication and division of decimals, squaring and cubing numbers mentally, and estimating square roots. Many students who are fine on Papers 2 and 3 are genuinely caught out on Paper 1 because they have never practised without the calculator — it has been on the desk in every maths lesson since Year 7. The fix is straightforward: a daily 10-minute non-calculator warm-up, four or five questions, no device in reach. Do it in the morning before school. After six weeks the speed and confidence shifts noticeably. OCR students should note that OCR J560 Paper 1 also tests a slightly higher proportion of number and proportion topics than AQA or Edexcel, so fraction fluency matters even more.

Exams combine topics deliberately

Recognise the hidden topic — not just the obvious one

GCSE examiners frequently dress one topic up as another. A question that opens with 'a rectangular field has an area of x² + 7x + 12 square metres' is an algebra question masquerading as an area question — you need to factorise, not just multiply. A question that gives you a ratio and asks for a missing angle has a quadratic hiding inside it. A statistics question asking for the probability of picking two cards from a sample that matches the frequency table is a tree diagram question wearing a histogram's clothes. The skill examiners are testing is topic recognition — knowing which tool to reach for before you start calculating. The best way to build this is to do past-paper questions mixed across topics, not topic-by-topic revision booklets, at least in Year 11. After working through five or six mixed papers your child will start to see the patterns.

A check that takes 30 seconds and saves 3 marks

Estimate first, sanity-check last

One of the most consistent ways students lose marks in GCSE Maths is submitting an answer that is obviously wrong — not because they do not know the topic, but because they made a slip they did not catch. A probability that comes out as 1.7. An area in square centimetres that comes out as 40,000. A speed that comes out as 0.003 mph for a car on a motorway. Teach your child this two-step habit: before using the calculator, round all numbers to one significant figure and estimate roughly what the answer should be — on Edexcel Higher this is sometimes explicitly tested as a 'show that the answer is approximately' question. After calculating, ask 'does this make sense in context?' before writing it down. This takes 20 to 30 seconds per question and catches a disproportionate number of errors. Examiners across all three boards comment in their senior examiner reports every year that students lose marks on answers that contradict the context of the question.

Consistency beats cramming. A realistic routine — even 20–30 minutes a day — will take you much further than an all-nighter the week before.

Do questions, don't just read examples

GCSE Maths cannot be revised by reading. You must do questions. For every topic, find 5-10 practice questions at your target grade level and work through them with pen and paper. Check the mark scheme after each one. Reading a worked example and thinking 'I get that' is not the same as solving it yourself.

Practise non-calculator skills separately

Paper 1 is non-calculator and students consistently score lower on it. Practise long multiplication, long division, fraction arithmetic, and percentage calculations without a calculator. These skills rust quickly if you always reach for the calculator during homework.

Learn from mark schemes, not just answers

GCSE Maths mark schemes show you exactly how marks are allocated. A 4-mark question usually has 1 mark for method, 1 for substitution, 1 for working, and 1 for the answer. Understanding this helps you show the right working and pick up marks even when your final answer is wrong.

Mix topics in every practice session

In the exam, topics aren't separated — a question might combine ratio, algebra, and geometry. Practise with mixed-topic question sets to build the skill of recognising which method to use. This is the difference between 'I can do algebra when I know it's algebra' and 'I can spot when a problem needs algebra.'

Mistakes to avoid

Most lost revision time comes down to a handful of habits. Steer clear of these and you'll get far more out of every session.

Common traps
  • Not showing working — even if the answer is right, you get zero marks without working on 'show that' questions, and you miss method marks when the answer is wrong.
  • Rounding too early in multi-step calculations. Keep full precision until the final answer, then round as the question asks.
  • Forgetting to check units in context questions — if the answer is '3' but the question asks for time in hours and minutes, you need '3 hours' or convert to hours and minutes.
  • On non-calculator Paper 1, making arithmetic errors because you rush. Check your arithmetic — one wrong subtraction can cost you 4 marks on a multi-step question.
  • Not reading the question fully. 'Give your answer to 2 decimal places' or 'Give your answer in its simplest form' are instructions that cost marks when ignored.

Revising by year group

Good revision looks different depending on where you are. Pick your year to see exactly where to start and how to build up from there.

Build the foundations that every later topic depends on

Most of Year 9 is number and algebra. Get those right and Years 10 and 11 become dramatically easier.

Where to start

Start with fractions, decimals, and percentages — not because they are the most exciting, but because they appear inside almost every other GCSE topic. A student who cannot confidently convert between the three forms will struggle with probability, statistics, ratio, and proportion in Year 10 and 11. Then move to algebra: expanding brackets, simplifying expressions, solving linear equations, and substitution. These are the engine that powers quadratics, functions, and vectors later.

How to build up
  1. 1

    Consolidate number

    Fractions, decimals, percentages, factors, multiples, prime factorisation, HCF and LCM. These are examined directly and appear embedded inside longer questions throughout the GCSE.

  2. 2

    Build algebra fluency

    Expanding single and double brackets, collecting like terms, forming and solving linear equations, using substitution. On Foundation tier this is assessed directly; on Higher tier it is assumed as background knowledge.

  3. 3

    Cover basic geometry

    Angle facts (parallel lines, polygons, bearings), area and perimeter of standard 2D shapes, volume of cuboids and prisms. Pythagoras' theorem often appears in Year 9 — it is worth learning properly now.

  4. 4

    Introduction to statistics

    Mean, median, mode, range from frequency tables; drawing and reading bar charts, pie charts, and scatter graphs. These are reliable Foundation marks and a foundation for cumulative frequency and histograms in Year 10.

  5. 5

    No past papers yet — use topic exercises

    In Year 9, the goal is fluency rather than exam technique. Work through topic-focused practice rather than full papers. Past papers become the main tool in Year 11.

The full path from the start of the course to exam day — what to focus on at each stage, and a tip for parents along the way.

  1. Year 10

    September — July

    GCSE Maths revision should start with building fluency in fundamentals: fractions, percentages, ratio, basic algebra, and angles. These underpin everything in Year 11. Don't rely on a calculator for basic arithmetic — Paper 1 is non-calculator and worth a third of your grade. If you can't do long multiplication, fraction arithmetic, and percentage calculations by hand, practise until you can. Parents: regular short practice is far more effective than occasional long sessions for Maths.

    Parents

    Ask your child to explain one maths topic to you each week — not to test them, but because explaining it forces them to consolidate it. You do not need to understand the answer. Ask 'why does that step work?' and see if they can tell you. If they cannot explain it, they probably do not have it as securely as they think.

  2. Year 11 — Autumn term

    September — December

    Year 11 introduces the hardest GCSE Maths topics: quadratics, trigonometry, circle theorems, vectors, and iterative methods (Higher only). Keep practising the basics while learning these — exam questions routinely combine Year 10 and Year 11 content. Start a formula sheet with every formula you need to memorise (the exam only gives you a few). Do 10 questions every evening, mixing topics.

    Parents

    When mock papers come home, do not focus on the grade. Sit down together and go through the mark scheme question by question — it will be on the exam board's website. For each question they lost marks on, ask: did they not know it, or did they know it but make a slip? Those are different problems and need different solutions.

  3. 6 months before exams

    December — January

    Work through the entire GCSE Maths specification topic by topic. For each one, do 5 practice questions. If you get 4 or more right, move on. If fewer, study the method and do 10 more. This systematic approach ensures you cover everything rather than just revising what you're already good at. Use a revision guide or online questions bank sorted by topic for this phase.

    Parents

    Download Paper 1 (non-calculator) from the AQA, Edexcel, or OCR website — whichever board your child's school uses. Set a timer for 30 minutes and watch them do the first half of it at the kitchen table. You do not need to mark it. Just observe: do they reach for a calculator out of habit? Do they rush through without writing working? What you see will tell you more than any grade will.

  4. Mock exams

    January — February

    Your Maths mock is the most important diagnostic you'll get. After the mock, list every topic where you dropped marks. These are your revision priorities for the next three months of GCSE Maths revision. Don't just look at your grade — look at which questions you got wrong and why. Was it a silly mistake, a method you didn't know, or a question you didn't attempt? Each needs a different fix.

    Parents

    After mock results, help your child make a list of the topics they dropped marks on — not a vague 'I need to revise more maths' but a specific list: 'circle theorems, quadratic formula, reading frequency tables'. Then ask which one they want to start with. Having a concrete list they wrote themselves is more motivating than a general instruction to revise.

  5. 3 months before exams

    March — April

    Do one full GCSE Maths past paper per week — all three papers over a weekend. Mark them ruthlessly using the mark scheme. Focus your weekday practice on the topics that keep coming up wrong. For Higher: make sure you can solve simultaneous equations, complete the square, and use trigonometry for non-right-angled triangles. For Foundation: nail ratio, percentages, and basic probability — these topics alone are worth 30+ marks.

    Parents

    Protect the 10-minute non-calculator warm-up every morning. It sounds trivial but it is not — Paper 1 is a third of the grade and most students do almost no specific preparation for it. Four or five questions on fractions, long multiplication, and basic surds before school, no phone nearby. You can find free non-calculator question sets on Corbettmaths or Dr Frost Maths by searching for Paper 1 practice.

  6. Final weeks

    May — exam day

    Final GCSE Maths revision should focus on exam technique. Practise timing: you have roughly 1 minute per mark. Skip questions you're stuck on and come back to them. For non-calculator Paper 1, practise mental arithmetic and estimation. Make sure you show all working — even if your answer is wrong, method marks can be the difference between grades. The night before: review your formula sheet and do 10 quick-fire questions on your weakest topics, then stop.

    Parents

    In the final two weeks, the most useful thing you can do is manage the environment rather than the content. Make sure your child has a quiet place to do timed practice, that they are eating and sleeping, and that they are not doing four hours of maths on one day and none on the next. Consistency in the final stretch — an hour a day, every day — beats cramming sessions.

A note for parents

GCSE Maths is the subject where daily practice makes the biggest difference. Even 15-20 minutes every evening — working through a few questions, checking answers — builds the fluency that cramming cannot.

If your child says 'I can't do maths', the reality is usually 'I can't do a few specific topics.' Help them identify which topics they struggle with (algebra? fractions? geometry?) and target those specifically.

Past papers are freely available on every exam board's website. Printing a paper and sitting with your child while they attempt it under timed conditions is one of the most effective things you can do. You don't need to mark it — the mark schemes are online too.

Foundation vs Higher tier: schools choose which tier students sit. Foundation caps at grade 5, Higher starts at grade 4 (but grade 4 is harder to achieve on Higher). If your child is borderline, ask the teacher which tier gives them the best chance of a grade 4 or 5.
