Why I Built a GCSE Revision App for My Twin Boys
A parent's honest account. No startup funding. No team. Just a dad, a laptop, and two boys with GCSEs in 2027.
Dad, what should I revise?
The question that started everything
My twin boys, Allen and Aaron, are in Year 10. GCSEs are in 2027. Every evening, same thing. They'd sit down at the kitchen table, stare at their textbooks, and one of them would ask that question.
And I didn't know. I'm not a teacher. I didn't know which topics they'd covered, which ones they were behind on, or where the gaps were. So they'd flip to a random chapter, read it for a bit, and call it revision.
That question, “what should I revise?”, eventually became PrepWise.
From Paper Notes to a Full App
I started small. Revision notes. A spreadsheet. Then some Markdown files that became HTML pages, and the HTML became… an app.
The idea was simple: what if something could just tell them what to do each day? Thirty minutes. Three tasks. Done. No decisions.
Built with AI. Directed by a parent.
I have a software delivery background, but building a full revision app on my own was a different scale of problem. So I used AI. Claude, Codex, and Copilot. I'd describe what I wanted, it would help me build it. Late nights after the boys went to bed. Next morning I'd show them what I'd built. They'd say “yeah, this is good… but what about…” and we'd go again. That cycle repeated for months.
The app is better for it. But the decisions? What problems to solve, how it should feel, what actually matters for students. Those came from watching my boys sit at that table every evening.
