⚙️ The Political System: Why It Matters

America is a federal republic. This isn't just a fact to memorise — it EXPLAINS why so much inequality could exist:

  • Federal = power divided between national government and states. States could set their own laws on voting, segregation, alcohol — explaining why life was COMPLETELY different for a Black person in Mississippi vs New York.
  • Republican presidents dominated (Harding, Coolidge, Hoover). They believed in "laissez-faire" — government should NOT interfere with business. This helped the boom but meant NO help for those left behind.
  • "Rugged individualism" = the belief that people should help themselves, not rely on government. This would become crucial when the Depression hit.
