Historians debate which factor was most important. Use this cause chain to construct your analysis:

Spanish military advantages: steel armour and weapons, horses (unknown in the Americas), cannon and muskets — created psychological shock and practical lethality against obsidian-bladed weapons
Indigenous alliances: Tlaxcalans, Texcocans, and other subject peoples joined Cortés — provided the vast majority of fighting power; without them, conquest was impossible
Disease (smallpox): arrived ahead of full Spanish forces; killed Emperor Cuitláhuac; may have killed 40% of Tenochtitlan before the final siege; devastated Aztec leadership and morale
Diplomatic strategy: La Malinche's translation + intelligence; Cortés's manipulation of Aztec political divisions; taking Moctezuma hostage; exploiting resentment of Aztec tribute system
Political fragility: the empire was held by tribute and fear rather than loyalty; subject peoples had every reason to rebel when a credible alternative appeared
Combined effect: no single factor was sufficient alone; the conquest required the intersection of all five causes simultaneously

Describe Cortés's expedition to Mexico in 1519.
Cortés landed in February 1519 with approximately 500 soldiers, 16 horses, and cannon. He had defied the governor of Cuba (Velázquez) who tried to cancel the expedition. He famously scuttled (or beached) his ships to prevent his men deserting, cutting off retreat and forcing commitment to the conquest.
What was La Noche Triste and what happened?
The 'Night of Sorrows' (30 June–1 July 1520). While Cortés was away, Aztec warriors rose against the Spanish garrison; Moctezuma II was killed (by Spanish or his own people — disputed). The Spanish fled in chaos across the causeways, with hundreds drowning weighed down by stolen gold. It was a major Spanish defeat.
