Common Mistakes

  • Confusing Mary Queen of Scots with Mary I: They are different people โ€” Mary I was Elizabeth's half-sister who died in 1558; Mary Queen of Scots was her Scottish cousin, executed in 1587.
  • Saying the Armada was defeated by the English navy alone: Always include the storms โ€” the fleet was wrecked fleeing north around Scotland and Ireland. Both fireships and weather were decisive.
  • Listing Catholic plots without explaining how they connected: Link the plots to the papal bull of 1570 and to Mary Queen of Scots as the focal point โ€” examiners want causes linked, not listed.
  • Narrative instead of analysis in essay questions: Do not write "then the Babington Plot happened, then Mary was executed, then the Armada came." Instead explain WHY each event followed from the last and what this shows about Elizabeth's government.

What was recusancy and what was the fine from 1581?
Recusancy was the refusal to attend Church of England services. From 1581, the fine was raised to ยฃ20 per month for gentry recusants โ€” a huge sum. Used to financially weaken Catholic families as well as punish non-attendance.
When was Mary Queen of Scots executed, and why?
8 February 1587 at Fotheringhay Castle. She had been in English custody since 1568. Her written approval of the Babington Plot (1586) โ€” intercepted by Walsingham โ€” gave Elizabeth legal grounds to act.
