Exam Connection (OCR B J411)

Part of The Mughal Empire, 1526-1707 ยท Section 12 of 14

Exam FocusUnit: Component Group 4 โ€” Period StudiesGCSE

Frequency: High โ€” this topic appears regularly in OCR J411 Period Studies (CG4).

Typical questions:

  • "Describe two features of Akbar's religious policy." (4 marks)
  • "Describe three features of the Mughal Empire under Akbar." (6 marks)
  • "Why did the Mughal Empire decline after 1707? Explain your answer." (8 marks)
  • "'Akbar's religious tolerance was the main reason for Mughal success.' How far do you agree?" (16+4 SPaG marks)

For Level 3+ (7-8 marks on explain questions): You need to show HOW causes connect โ€” not just list them. For example: "Aurangzeb reimposed the jizya tax in 1679, which alienated the Hindu majority. This led to the growth of Maratha resistance because Shivaji's confederacy drew on Hindu identity and resentment of Mughal taxation. This meant Aurangzeb spent 26 years in costly Deccan Wars, draining the treasury and leaving the empire militarily exhausted."

For essays: Always argue on both sides. If arguing tolerance was key, acknowledge military strength. If arguing decline came from Aurangzeb, also note weak successors and British expansion.
