Why Historical Sites Matter

📖 Why Historical Sites Matter

Stand in the ruins of a Norman castle and you are standing inside a piece of evidence. The thick stone walls were not built for beauty — they were built to intimidate. The motte (the mound) gave defenders the high ground. The ditch was designed to stop attackers reaching the walls. Every choice the builder made tells you something about the world they lived in: who had power, who feared invasion, and how war was fought.

A historical site is a primary source you can walk around. Unlike a document, it occupies physical space. Unlike a photograph, it survives in three dimensions. But like every primary source, it has limitations — it has been altered, damaged, restored, and sometimes deliberately changed. The skill of History Around Us is learning to read a site carefully, using the right questions and the right types of evidence.

This unit is about those skills: how to analyse what you see, why some evidence survives and some does not, and how to combine the physical site with written and visual sources to build a genuine historical argument.

What is a historical palimpsest?: A site or document layered with evidence from different periods, where one layer of use has been partially erased and written over by another. Most historical sites are palimpsests — they show traces of many different phases of occupation, alteration, and use.

History glossary

What is a historical palimpsest?
A site or document layered with evidence from different periods, where one layer of use has been partially erased and written over by another. Most historical sites are palimpsests — they show traces of many different phases of occupation, alteration, and use.
What is dendrochronology and what can it date?
Tree-ring dating. Every year a tree grows a ring; wide rings indicate good growing years, narrow ones poor years. The unique pattern of rings for any given period is matched against a reference database. Can date timber beams to within 1–2 years of when the tree was felled. Only works on timber.

What Counts as a Historical Site?

A historical site is any place where the physical remains of the past survive in a form that historians and archaeologists can study. Sites come in many types, and each type tends to reveal different aspects of the past.

🎯 Exam Connection: OCR J411 History Around Us

Assessment: History Around Us (Component Group 2) is assessed differently from other OCR J411 units. You carry out a guided site study and are assessed on your ability to use historical skills to analyse your chosen site. The questions you encounter in assessments typically ask you to apply skills to evidence about a real site.

Typical question patterns:

  • "Describe two features of [named site]" — 4 marks. Name two distinct, evidenced features with brief supporting detail. One feature per paragraph.
  • "Describe three types of evidence used to study [site type]" — 6 marks. Three distinct source types, each with a specific example and explanation of what it reveals.
  • "Explain why physical evidence at [site] can be misleading" — 8 marks. Use specific evidence about restorations, missing features, or later changes. Link to the problem of relying on one source type.
  • "Explain why historians use multiple sources when studying a historical site" — 8 marks. Each source type has different strengths and limitations. The argument is about triangulation and compensating for the gaps of any single source.

Frequency: This component is compulsory for OCR J411 students. All site study questions appear in this unit — they do not appear in other components.

What the examiner rewards at higher levels: Specific evidence (named sites, specific source types, concrete examples), explanation of why sources have limitations (not just that they do), and analytical language that shows you are deploying evidence rather than listing it.
