A Duke shows a visitor a painted portrait of his late wife. He sounds proud. He sounds pleased. Then, as he talks, something shifts. The smiles she gave everyone — the blushes, the warm looks — he couldn't bear them. He gave commands. The smiles stopped. Now she lives only in the portrait, locked behind a curtain that only he draws back. Browning gives us all of this in one uninterrupted speech. The Duke never admits to murder. He doesn't need to. He tells us everything without meaning to.

- CONDEMN — Reveals his jealousy and the murderous “commands” through apparently casual speech; self-condemns without knowing it (“all smiles stopped together”)
- TRADE — Turns to negotiating the next Duchess; closes on Neptune taming a sea-horse (“for me”); the cycle of possession continues
Why it works: each move maps a section of Browning's argument. DISPLAY = power through image. CONDEMN = power through silence (of the victim). TRADE = power as system, not exception. The Duke's monologue does all three without pausing to reflect — that lack of reflection is Browning's point.
