The Detective and His Method
📖 The Detective and His Method
Chapter 1. Holmes lifts Watson's pocket watch and, without a word of explanation, delivers a complete biography: a dead elder brother, a man of good prospects, dissolute habits, and recovered hope. Watson, astonished, demands to know how. "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Doyle places this declaration at the beginning — not the climax — because the detective genre he is constructing requires us to trust the method before we follow the case.

- What is positivism and why does it matter for Holmes?
- Positivism: the philosophical view (associated with Auguste Comte, 1800s) that all genuine knowledge comes from observable, measurable facts. Nothing supernatural, nothing emotional, nothing speculative — only what can be observed, tested, and eliminated. Holmes's method IS positivism applied to crime. 'Eliminate the impossible' = remove the unobserved; 'whatever remains must be the truth' = the observable evidence forces the conclusion. Doyle was a trained doctor — clinical diagnosis and detective deduction share the same epistemological shape. For the essay: naming Holmes as a positivist detective and linking this to Victorian faith in science = integrated AO3, not bolt-on context.
Doyle constructs the detective novel's conventions in the opening chapters as deliberately and self-consciously as Holmes constructs his deductions. The commission arrives via Mary Morstan — the classic client-seeking-help entrance. Holmes reads clues from Watson's watch and physical appearance (tan line, bearing, watc

🧠 Memory Aid: The Genre Trajectory — EDL
E — EMERGENCE: Doyle establishes genre rules (the commission, the watch-reading, the manifesto "I never guess").
D — DISPLAY: The method at full power (footprints, Thames chase, logical elimination of suspects).
L — LIMITATION: The genre cannot prevent loss, cannot provide love, cannot fill the gap cocaine does.
Why it works: EDL traces the genre's trajectory from construction through display to self-interrogation. Naming all three stages in an essay — and showing Doyle both building and questioning detective conventions — is the Level 5-6 move.
