A soldier returns from war. His friend falls in love. A villain spreads a lie. And in the space of five acts, Shakespeare nearly destroys a woman with a false accusation, nearly turns a comedy into a tragedy, and makes the audience watch a court full of people believe what they want to believe rather than what is true.
Much Ado About Nothing is a play about deception — not only Don John's. The trick that saves the play (Benedick and Beatrice) and the trick that almost destroys it (the window scene) are structurally parallel. Shakespeare pairs a benign lie with a lethal one to ask one unsettling question: what makes us believe what we believe?

- What is gulling?
- To trick someone by staging a false scene for them to overhear. Both Beatrice and Benedick are gulled in Act 2. The word carries comic connotations — to be gulled is to be a fool — but Shakespeare's gulling scenes REVEAL buried feeling rather than manufacture false feeling.
- What is a malcontent in drama?
- A dramatic type — the outsider who resents the social order and seeks to disrupt it. Don John is the play's malcontent: he announces 'I cannot hide what I am.' Shakespeare uses him as a structural mechanism rather than a psychologically complex villain — his illegitimacy is the source of his resentment.
