My father's family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip.
Why this quote matters: Dickens opens the novel with an act of linguistic diminishment. "Philip Pirrip" is reduced to "Pip" — monosyllabic, minimal. The retrospective narrator performs this reduction calmly, as if it were inevitable. Dickens uses the opening sentence to establish the novel's central preoccupation: the tension between Pip's real self and the reduced, class-shaped identity others assign him.

What is dramatic irony, and give an example from Great Expectations's structure?
Dramatic irony: when the audience/reader knows something that a character does not — the gap between character knowledge and reader knowledge creates tension, comedy, or tragedy.
In Great Expectations: the adult narrator knows Magwitch is the benefactor from the start of the narration; the reader learns this in Chapter 39. But crucially, Dickens constructs the READER's false assumption just as he constructs Pip's — we too believe in Miss Havisham's patronage. The revelation therefore corrects both character and reader simultaneously.
