📌 The Third Dutch War (1672-74)

Charles allied with Catholic France against Protestant Holland — hugely unpopular. Parliament refused to fund it properly. English won some naval battles but achieved nothing lasting. Peace made in 1674 — Parliament forced Charles to abandon the war. This was linked to the Secret Treaty of Dover (1670) where Charles promised Louis XIV to eventually convert to Catholicism in exchange for money. When this became suspected, it fuelled fears about Charles and Catholicism.
