🧠 Why Fight the Dutch?

Trade rivalry: Both nations wanted to dominate world trade. Dutch controlled spice trade (East Indies), were major carriers of goods. English Navigation Acts (1651, 1660 laws requiring goods to be carried in English ships) tried to exclude them.
African trade: English and Dutch companies competed for slaves and gold on African coast. Raids on each other's trading posts.
Royal ambition: Charles's brother James (Lord High Admiral — the officer commanding the Royal Navy) wanted naval glory. Many courtiers expected easy victory and war profits.
Overconfidence: English had beaten Dutch in First Dutch War (1652-54). Expected to win again. Underestimated Dutch recovery and determination.
