Part of The First Crusade, c.1070-1100 ยท Section 12 of 14

Exam FocusUnit: Component Group 5 โ€” World Depth StudiesGCSE

Where this fits: The First Crusade is an optional World Depth Study in Component Group 5 of OCR B J411. This topic is examined in Paper 2 (Component Group 5).

Typical exam questions:

  • "Describe two features of the People's Crusade" (4 marks)
  • "Describe three features of the Siege of Antioch" (6 marks)
  • "Explain why the First Crusade succeeded" (8 marks)
  • "How far did Muslim disunity cause the success of the First Crusade? Explain your answer." (18 marks)

For Level 3โ€“4 on 8-mark questions: Explain HOW each factor led to the outcome. For example: "Muslim disunity was crucial because the Seljuk Turks and Fatimid Egyptians were rivals who refused to coordinate โ€” this meant the crusaders faced piecemeal opposition at each siege rather than a united front."

For the 18-mark essay: You must argue, counter-argue, and reach a judgement. Consider which factor was most important and WHY. Muslim disunity and crusader religious motivation are the strongest arguments. Always use specific evidence (dates, names, battles).

What was the People's Crusade (1096) and why did it fail?
Led by Peter the Hermit, the People's Crusade was a disorganised mass of mostly poor pilgrims who set out before the main armies. Lacking military discipline and supplies, they sacked Christian villages in Hungary and the Byzantine Empire. When they crossed into Anatolia in October 1096, the Seljuk Turks ambushed and massacred them near Nicaea. Only a handful survived. It shows that enthusiasm without military organisation is fatal.
Who were the four main leaders of the First Crusade?
1. Godfrey of Bouillon (Lorraine/Germany) โ€” later became Defender of the Holy Sepulchre. 2. Raymond IV of Toulouse (southern France) โ€” the wealthiest and most prestigious leader. 3. Bohemond of Taranto (Norman from southern Italy) โ€” the best military commander; kept Antioch. 4. Hugh of Vermandois (brother of French king) โ€” provided royal prestige.
