๐ฏ Common Question Types
- "Describe two/three features of..." โ 4 or 6 marks (identify + explain each feature with evidence)
- "Explain why..." โ 8 marks (three causes minimum, each explained with HOW it led to the outcome)
- Essay: "How far did [factor] cause...?" โ 18 marks (argument, counter-argument, judgement)
๐ How to Move from Level 2 to Level 3 (8-mark questions)
- Level 2: "Muslim disunity helped the crusaders" (states the cause)
- Level 3: "Muslim disunity meant the crusaders faced separate opponents at each stage โ Kilij Arslan at Dorylaeum, Kerbogha at Antioch, and the Fatimids at Jerusalem โ rather than a united coalition, so each individual siege was winnable even though the crusaders were often outnumbered overall." (explains HOW with specific evidence)
โ ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Saying the crusaders "always won easily" โ the Siege of Antioch nearly ended the crusade through starvation
- Ignoring Muslim disunity โ it is arguably the single most important reason for success
- Forgetting to name specific leaders โ use Godfrey of Bouillon, Bohemond, Raymond of Toulouse by name
- On essays, writing only one side โ you MUST argue AND counter-argue to reach Level 3+
- Confusing Seljuk Turks (Sunni, captured Jerusalem 1071) with Fatimids (Shia Egyptians, recaptured Jerusalem 1098)
