Part of The Making of America, 1789-1900 ยท Section 15 of 16

Exam TipsUnit: Component Group 4 โ€” Period StudiesGCSE

๐ŸŽฏ Moving from Level 2 to Level 3 (Explain Why โ€” 8 marks):

  • Level 2 states a reason: "The Civil War happened because of slavery."
  • Level 3 explains the reason with evidence and causation: "Slavery caused the Civil War because the South's entire economy depended on enslaved labour โ€” by 1860 cotton accounted for 60% of all US exports. When Lincoln was elected in 1860 on a platform restricting slavery's spread (without a single southern electoral vote), southern states saw secession as the only way to protect their economic system and social order."
  • Key technique: Always explain WHY something caused something else, not just that it did.

๐Ÿ“ Essay technique (16+4 marks):

  • Agree AND disagree โ€” the question asks "how far", so you must present both sides with evidence
  • Reach a judgement โ€” decide which factor was most important and explain why
  • Use specific evidence โ€” dates, statistics, names (Missouri Compromise 1820; 620,000 died; Lincoln's election 1860)
  • SPaG matters: 4 marks for spelling, punctuation, and grammar on the 16-mark essay

โš ๏ธ Common mistakes to avoid:

  • Saying the Civil War was about "states' rights" without specifying it was the right to own enslaved people
  • Listing facts without explaining their significance
  • Forgetting to include specific statistics (e.g. "many Native Americans died" rather than "4,000+ Cherokee died on the Trail of Tears" or "250-300 Sioux killed at Wounded Knee")
  • Missing the connection between events โ€” always show HOW one cause led to another

What was Manifest Destiny?
The belief, coined by journalist John O'Sullivan in 1845, that it was God's plan for the United States to expand across the entire North American continent. It provided moral justification for displacing Native peoples, annexing Texas, and fighting the Mexican-American War. Millions of Americans genuinely believed in it as a divine mission.
What was the Missouri Compromise of 1820?
An agreement to maintain the balance between slave and free states. Missouri entered as a slave state, Maine as a free state. A line at 36ยฐ30' N latitude was drawn โ€” slavery permitted south of it, banned north of it. It preserved the Union for 30 years until the Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854) repealed it, leading to 'Bleeding Kansas' โ€” a guerrilla war between pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers.
