Common Mistakes

  • Saying "the Civil War was about states' rights": Always specify it was the right to own enslaved people โ€” the Confederate declarations of secession name slavery explicitly.
  • Listing causes of the Civil War without linking them: Show HOW each cause connected โ€” e.g. western expansion forced the slavery question, which made the Missouri Compromise, which broke down into Bleeding Kansas, which proved violence was inevitable.
  • Vague evidence about Native Americans: Use specific statistics โ€” "4,000+ Cherokee died on the Trail of Tears" and "250-300 Sioux were killed at Wounded Knee", not just "many Native Americans died".
  • Describing events without analysis: Don't just narrate what happened โ€” explain WHY it happened and what its consequences were. "The buffalo were destroyed" needs to become "The deliberate destruction of 30-60 million buffalo removed the economic foundation of Plains Indian life, making independent survival impossible."

What was the Missouri Compromise of 1820?
An agreement to maintain the balance between slave and free states. Missouri entered as a slave state, Maine as a free state. A line at 36ยฐ30' N latitude was drawn โ€” slavery permitted south of it, banned north of it. It preserved the Union for 30 years until the Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854) repealed it, leading to 'Bleeding Kansas' โ€” a guerrilla war between pro-slavery and anti-slavery settlers.
What was Manifest Destiny?
The belief, coined by journalist John O'Sullivan in 1845, that it was God's plan for the United States to expand across the entire North American continent. It provided moral justification for displacing Native peoples, annexing Texas, and fighting the Mexican-American War. Millions of Americans genuinely believed in it as a divine mission.
