📖 Setting the Scene
Before 1948, if you were poor and got sick in Britain, you might die. Doctors charged fees; hospitals ran on charity. Rich people got good healthcare; poor people got nothing. Then came WW2. The government took control of hospitals for war casualties. The Beveridge Report (1942) proposed a "welfare state" from cradle to grave. In 1948, Labour Health Minister Aneurin Bevan launched the National Health Service: free healthcare for everyone, funded by taxes. Doctors opposed it fiercely — but it transformed British society.
