🧩 El sistema g/gu — The g/gu System
Spanish needed a clever trick to keep the hard /g/ sound before e and i — because g + e/i automatically becomes the guttural /x/. The solution is the silent u inserted between g and the vowel.
Without gu — guttural /x/ result:
- gente = /xente/ (g before e → guttural)
- gitano = /xitano/ (g before i → guttural)
With gu — hard /g/ preserved:
- guerra = /gera/ — gue keeps hard /g/, the u is silent
- guitarra = /gitara/ — gui keeps hard /g/, the u is silent
With ü — the u IS pronounced (/gw/):
- vergüenza = /bergwenza/
- lingüística = /lingwistika/
