❌ Error 1: Discutimos sobre fútbol. (meaning: we discuss football)
✅ Correcto: Hablamos de fútbol. (if meaning "we discuss / talk about football") · Discutimos mucho. (if meaning "we argue a lot")
Por qué importa: Discutir is a false friend. In Spanish, discutir means to argue or quarrel — a heated disagreement, not a calm conversation. To say "we discuss football," use hablamos de fútbol. This false-friend error appears in many GCSE scripts and immediately signals a misunderstanding of register. Examiners penalise it because it changes the meaning of the sentence entirely.
❌ Error 2: Yo salgo con mis amigos, pero él salro en el fin de semana.
✅ Correcto: Yo salgo con mis amigos, pero él sale los fines de semana.
Por qué importa: Salir is a yo-go verb — yo salgo — but the irregularity only affects the yo form. The él/ella form is perfectly regular: sale. Forms like salro or saligo do not exist. Also note: los fines de semana (on weekends) is the more natural AQA phrasing; en el fin de semana is understood but less idiomatic.
