📚 Estructuras complejas — Complex Spelling Structures

Three spelling systems trip up even confident Higher students in dictation. Each has a clear, learnable rule — once you understand WHY the spelling changes, the correct form becomes obvious.
Structure Rule Examples
Gerundio + clitic pronoun Adding -me/-te/-se/-nos shifts the syllable count and would move the spoken stress — a written accent preserves the original stress position levantando → levantándome; duchando → duchándose
-gar verbs (yo preterite) g → gu before Ă© to preserve the hard /g/ sound lleguĂ©, juguĂ©, paguĂ©
-car verbs (yo preterite) c → qu before Ă© to preserve the hard /k/ sound busquĂ©, saquĂ©, toquĂ©
-zar verbs (yo preterite) z → c before Ă© (z never appears before e/i in Spanish) empecĂ©, lancĂ©, alcancĂ©
Present subjunctive -AR uses -e endings: hable, hables, hable, hablemos, hablĂ©is, hablen ÂĄHabla! → que hable (subj.)
Present subjunctive -ER/-IR uses -a endings: coma, comas, coma, comamos, comáis, coman ¡Come! → que coma (subj.)
Spotlight
Gerundio + pronombre — The Accent Shift Rule

The gerundio in Spanish (the -ando/-iendo form) has a fixed stress pattern. When you attach a clitic pronoun (me, te, se, nos), the word gains a syllable. Without a written accent, the stress would shift to the wrong syllable. The written accent locks the stress in its original position.

⚠ Errores del subjuntivo y del pretĂ©rito

These five errors all come from the same source: students know the spoken form but do not know the spelling rule. Learn the rule, not just the word.

❌ Error 1: llegĂ©

✅ Correcto: lleguĂ©

Why it costs marks: -gar verbs change g → gu before Ă© in the yo preterite to preserve the hard /g/ sound. llegĂ© does not exist — lleguĂ© is the only correct form.

❌ Error 2: buscĂ©

✅ Correcto: busquĂ©

Why it costs marks: -car verbs change c → qu before Ă© in the yo preterite to preserve the hard /k/ sound. busquĂ© is the only correct spelling.

❌ Error 3: empezĂ©

✅ Correcto: empecĂ©

Why it costs marks: -zar verbs change z → c before Ă© because z never appears before e or i in standard Spanish. empecĂ© is the only correct form.

❌ Error 4: levantandome

✅ Correcto: levantándome

Why it costs marks: Adding -me to levantando shifts the syllable count. The written accent on the ĂĄ preserves the original stress on the -TAN- syllable. Without it, the form is both incorrect and ambiguous.

❌ Error 5: No hable (as negative imperative)

✅ Correcto: ¡No hables!

Why it costs marks: Negative imperatives use the present subjunctive tĂș form (hables, not hable). The ÂĄ! punctuation is also required at the start. ÂĄNo hables! = Don't speak! (tĂș). ÂĄNo hable! = Don't speak! (usted) — a different register entirely.
