🔍 Señales de actitud — Attitude Signals

AQA Higher passages about personal topics always carry emotional vocabulary. The author's adjectives tell you how they feel — not just what happened. Identifying the right attitude word is often the key to unlocking both P/N/P+N tasks and "find 4 true" statements.

Positive Negative Mixed / Uncertain
esperanzado/a (hopeful) desilusionado/a (disappointed) puede que (perhaps)
satisfecho/a (satisfied) preocupado/a (worried) quizás (maybe)
aliviado/a (relieved) resignado/a (resigned) tal vez (perhaps)
orgulloso/a (proud) inquieto/a (unsettled) no estoy seguro/a (unsure)

⭐ The sin embargo pivot

Whenever you see sin embargo, the author's REAL position comes AFTER it. The sentence before is a concession — acknowledged but then countered. AQA inference questions regularly ask about the author's TRUE attitude, which is hidden in the post-sin embargo clause.

Example: "El proyecto parecía imposible; sin embargo, me sentí orgulloso al terminarlo." The author felt proud — not defeated. The difficulty is the concession; pride is the real attitude.

P/N/P+N question type — what do these stand for?
P = Positive; N = Negative; P+N = Both positive and negative. E.g. "Me gusta el colegio pero el recreo es muy corto." → P+N (both expressed in the same sentence).
What is "inference" in a reading task?
Inferring = deducing meaning not directly stated. The passage says "Salgo raramente con mis amigos" — you infer the person has limited social life, even though they never say "I'm lonely."
