🎯 Técnica Higher — Higher Speaking Strategy

At Higher, the unpredictable questions are designed to push you beyond your prepared answers. The examiner wants you to use complex Spanish — it's their job to give you a chance to show what you know. Don't retreat to safe, simple sentences when a question catches you off guard. That's precisely when a conditional or subjunctive earns you marks that simpler language cannot.
  • Use your preparation time to think of two to three hypothetical scenarios linked to the photo topic — Si tuviera... You will need one for an unpredictable question.
  • Plan ONE subjunctive use in advance — es importante que... / para que... — even a single correct subjunctive earns marks under AO4.
  • For every unpredictable question, deploy the 5-part expansion: direct answer + porque + personal example + contrast + future angle.
  • Read the photo as a theme, not just a picture: ¿Qué problema social o medioambiental muestra? ¿Qué mensaje transmite? These questions come up in the unpredictable phase.
  • Replace all Foundation-level adjectives before you start: buenobeneficioso; maloperjudicial; interesanteestimulante; importantefundamental / imprescindible.
