🔍 Los pronombres de objeto directo — Direct object pronouns (DOPs)

A direct object is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb directly. Instead of repeating the noun (el libro, la película), you replace it with the matching pronoun. The key is matching gender and number to the noun being replaced.

Persona DOP English
1ª sing. me me
2ª sing. te you (informal)
3ª sing. m. lo him / it (masc.)
3ª sing. f. la her / it (fem.)
1ª pl. nos us
2ª pl. os you all (informal)
3ª pl. m. los them (masc./mixed)
3ª pl. f. las them (fem.)

Replacement in practice:

¿Tienes el libro?Sí, lo tengo. (el libro is masculine singular → lo)

¿Ves la película?Sí, la veo. (la película is feminine singular → la)

⭐ Position rule — ALWAYS before the conjugated verb

The DOP ALWAYS comes before the conjugated verb:

lo compro ✅ · no lo compro ✅ · ¿lo tienes?

Never: *compro lo ❌ — placing the DOP after the conjugated verb is a serious grammar error and will be penalised under AO3.
