🔍 Las estructuras de Higher — The Higher Toolkit for Social Media
AQA Paper 4 Writing and Paper 3 Speaking at Higher tier expect complex sentence structures, not just vocabulary lists. Two structures are especially rewarded on social media topics: aunque + indicative for concession, and a balanced argument using connectives.
1 · Aunque (although / even though) + indicative — concession with a known fact
When the conceded fact is real and known, aunque is followed by the indicative (the normal present tense you already know). This is the pattern required at GCSE:
| Sentence | Translation |
|---|---|
| Aunque las redes sociales son útiles, pueden ser adictivas. | Although social media is useful, it can be addictive. |
| Aunque publico fotos a diario, intento proteger mi privacidad. | Although I post photos daily, I try to protect my privacy. |
| Aunque el ciberacoso existe, la mayoría de usuarios lo ignora. | Although cyberbullying exists, most users ignore it. |
2 · Connectives for balanced evaluation
A balanced essay or spoken answer moves through points on both sides. These five connectives signal structure to the examiner:
| Connective | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| por un lado | on the one hand | Por un lado, conecta a la gente. |
| por otro lado | on the other hand | Por otro lado, puede ser dañino. |
| sin embargo | however | Sin embargo, hay que tener cuidado. |
| a pesar de (+ noun / infinitive) | despite | A pesar de los riesgos, lo uso. |
| en definitiva | ultimately / in short | En definitiva, todo depende del uso. |
