🔍 Hablar de las vacaciones — Three Time Frames
AQA rewards tense variety across all four papers. For holidays, you need to cover the preterite (what happened), the present (opinions and preferences), and the near future or conditional (plans and wishes). Missing any time frame costs marks on AO2 (grammar and accuracy).
Pasado (preterite) — What happened on holiday
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Fui a España con mi familia. / Fuimos a Francia. | I went to Spain with my family. / We went to France. |
| Me quedé en un hotel / un albergue juvenil / un camping. | I stayed in a hotel / a youth hostel / a campsite. |
| Lo pasé bien / genial / fatal / fenomenal. | I had a good / great / terrible / wonderful time. |
| Hice senderismo. / Tomé el sol. / Hice surf. | I went hiking. / I sunbathed. / I surfed. |
Presente (present) — Opinions and preferences
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| Me encantan las vacaciones en la playa porque hace mucho calor. | I love beach holidays because it's very hot. |
| Prefiero las vacaciones en la montaña porque me gusta el senderismo. | I prefer mountain holidays because I like hiking. |
Futuro — Plans and wishes
| Spanish | English | Level |
|---|---|---|
| El año que viene, voy a ir a Italia. | Next year, I am going to go to Italy. | Foundation — near future (voy a + infinitive) |
| Me gustaría visitar Japón algún día. | I would like to visit Japan one day. | Higher — conditional (polite wish) |
⭐ AQA time frame rule — three tenses, more marks
For AQA speaking tasks and longer writing tasks, always include three time frames — past, present, and future/conditional. Examiners award marks specifically for tense variety on AO2. A holiday answer written entirely in the present tense can lose up to 5 marks. The conditional me gustaría is one of the highest-value structures at Higher — it shows command of a complex tense without using the full conditional conjugation.
