Why this quote matters: This is the poem's most politically charged moment. Tennyson acknowledges the catastrophic error that sent six hundred men into an impossible charge, but does so with deliberate vagueness: "Someone." The indefinite pronoun refuses to prosecute while refusing to pretend the error did not happen. Tennyson positions the blunder as the context for heroism, not as its opposite. The error makes the obedience more remarkable, not less.
