🗣️ Anchor Quote: The Question of Faith

"Is it that we are dying?"
Owen (soldier-speaker) Stanza 5 Futility · Faith · Uncertainty · Death
Why this quote matters: Owen makes death a question rather than a statement. The rhetorical question reveals exhaustion so total that the men cannot tell whether they are already in the process of dying. Owen positions this uncertainty as more devastating than certainty of death -- it is not heroic to die without knowing you are dying. The line arrives mid-stanza, destabilising the reader as it destabilises the speaker.
Use this quote when answering: How Owen presents death as unheroic; the soldiers' psychological state; Owen's argument against glorifying war; the use of questioning in the poem; comparison with Dulce et Decorum Est (where death is witnessed directly, not questioned).
