Richard Enfield cannot explain what is wrong with the man he saw. He watched him trample a child calmly, hand over a cheque to her weeping family, and disappear. The man's face left a mark — not memory, but revulsion.

"There is something wrong with his appearance," he tells Utterson. Something displeasing. Something downright detestable. He cannot say what.

Stevenson will spend the whole novella explaining what Enfield cannot. The answer is not that Hyde is evil. The answer is far stranger: he is you.
