Laissez-faire (French: 'leave alone') is the economic and political philosophy that governments should not interfere in private wealth or social conditions — that poverty and hardship are natural results of individual failure and should not be relieved by public action. Scrooge's Stave 1 position — 'Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?' — is laissez-faire ideology in action. Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843 as a direct counter-argument: the novella shows that private individuals can and must act, even when governments will not.
