What was the 'cross-dressing convention' in Elizabethan theatre, and why does it matter for Portia?

The convention: In Elizabethan professional theatre, all roles — including female roles — were played by male actors (usually boy actors for women's parts). Women were legally prohibited from the stage. Why it matters for Portia: An Elizabethan audience watching Portia's disguise as Balthazar saw a male actor playing a woman playing a man. The layers of performed gender are tripled. Shakespeare makes gender performance visible through the very casting system of his theatre. AO2 use: When Portia describes disguise as "tricks" to "practise", she is describing gender as learnable behaviour — and the audience has proof of it in front of them.
