Three stages. Three words. One character arc.
LOVER → AVENGER → MARTYR
- LOVER — Acts 1-2: Petrarchan pose abandoned, genuine love declared, secret marriage. Romeo acts from love.
- AVENGER — Act 3: Mercutio's death, Tybalt's killing, exile. Romeo acts from grief.
- MARTYR — Acts 4-5: False news received, poison bought, tomb death. Romeo acts from love again — but the world has no space for it.
Notice: he begins and ends acting from love. The middle stage is the collision. Shakespeare uses this shape to show that it was not love that destroyed Romeo — it was a world that refused to accommodate love alongside inherited violence.
