Define: Enlightenment and Romanticism — and how they relate to Frankenstein.

Enlightenment (roughly 1680–1800): The European philosophical movement that placed human reason at the centre of knowledge. Held that science and rational enquiry could solve human problems. Victor's "I will pioneer a new way" (Ch.3) is Enlightenment language taken to its extreme. Romanticism (early 1800s): A reaction against Enlightenment confidence. Emphasised imagination, emotion, and the natural world as correctives to pure reason. Frankenstein was published in 1818 — Shelley was a Romantic writer critiquing Enlightenment assumptions. Shelley's argument: Not that science is wrong, but that knowledge without moral accountability is dangerous. Victor is an Enlightenment figure undone by Romantic consequences — nature (the Creature) refuses to be controlled.
