Why this quote matters: Brontë places this line in Jane's interior reasoning as she resists St John's pressure. "Unblighted self" is Brontë's image for what St John's model of duty-marriage would destroy: Jane's independent interiority. The word "unblighted" names both the threat (St John's cold possession would blight it) and the value (it is currently intact). Brontë presents Jane's refusal of St John as the same act as her refusal of dependence on Rochester — both are refusals of structures that would extinguish her.
