🔢 El plural — Forming Plural Nouns
Spanish plural formation follows three simple rules based on the noun's final letter. Once the noun is plural, its article must also change to the plural form.
| Noun ending | Plural rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Vowel (a, e, i, o, u) | Add -s | libro → libros, clase → clases, chico → chicos |
| Consonant | Add -es | ciudad → ciudades, profesor → profesores, color → colores |
| -z | Change to -ces | lápiz → lápices, voz → voces, vez → veces |
When a noun becomes plural, its article must match: el libro → los libros; una ciudad → unas ciudades; el lápiz → los lápices.
Remember: the -z → -ces change affects the spelling but keeps the same /s/ sound throughout.
