🔍 Usos del condicional — Three Key Uses
The conditional has three main uses at GCSE. All three can appear in Paper 4 (writing) and Paper 2 (speaking) — and recognising them in Paper 3 (reading) and Paper 1 (listening) is also tested at Higher tier.
1 · Polite requests and formal language
The conditional makes requests sound more polite than using the present tense. Examiners reward polite register in role-play and transactional writing.
- Querría un café, por favor. — I would like a coffee, please.
- ¿Podría repetir eso? — Could you repeat that?
- Me gustaría reservar una mesa. — I would like to book a table.
2 · Wishes and hypothetical situations
Use the conditional to express what you would do, prefer, or want — ideal for future plans topics, environment, health, and any open-ended writing prompt.
- Me gustaría vivir en el extranjero. — I would like to live abroad.
- Preferiría estudiar arte. — I would prefer to study art.
- ¿Qué harías con un millón de euros? — What would you do with a million euros?
3 · Reporting what someone said they would do (hearsay)
After a verb of saying or thinking in the past (dijo que, pensaba que), the conditional expresses what was going to happen from that past perspective. This is the equivalent of English "he said he would come".
- Dijo que vendría mañana. — He said he would come tomorrow.
- Pensaba que sería fácil. — She thought it would be easy.
