🔍 El patrón de la bota — The Boot/Stem-Change Pattern
Three of these verbs follow the boot pattern (also called the L-shape). Draw a boot shape around yo, tú, él/ella, and ustedes — every form inside the boot changes its stem vowel. Nosotros sits outside the boot and keeps the original vowel.
⭐ Memory anchor
Think of a 'boot shape' — all the forms inside the boot change; nosotros (at the top, outside the boot) stays.
e → ie (querer)
- quiero · quieres · quiere · [queremos stays — outside the boot] · quieren
The nosotros form is the exception — it keeps the original stem vowel: queremos. Adding an ie diphthong to give a fake "nosotros" form is one of the most common GCSE errors. That form does not exist.
o → ue (poder, volver)
- puedo · puedes · puede · [podemos stays] · pueden
- vuelvo · vuelves · vuelve · [volvemos stays] · vuelven
Both poder and volver share the same o → ue change. Again, nosotros is the exception — podemos and volvemos keep the original o.
