💡 hacer: Three Key Idioms
hacer is used in three distinct ways you must know for GCSE. Its yo form is completely irregular: hago (not haco).
1. Hacer + actividad escolar / deportiva
- hacer los deberes — to do homework
- hacer deporte — to do sport
- hacer ejercicio — to do exercise
Hago los deberes después del colegio. — I do my homework after school.
2. Hacer + tiempo (weather)
- hace calor — it is hot
- hace frío — it is cold
- hace sol — it is sunny
- hace viento — it is windy
- hace buen tiempo — the weather is good
En verano hace calor y hace sol. — In summer it is hot and sunny.
NEVER use ser or estar for weather — always hacer. Writing es calor or está calor will cost marks.
3. Hace falta Higher
hace falta + infinitivo = it is necessary to / you need to
Hace falta estudiar todos los días. — It is necessary to study every day.
This impersonal expression uses the third-person singular of hacer and is fixed — it does not change for different subjects.
