🔍 Expresar opiniones — Three Higher-Range Patterns
AQA Paper 4 (Writing) awards marks for variety of expression under AO2 (communication) and AO3 (accuracy). Going beyond me gusta / no me gusta into these three structures is what separates Band 3 from Band 4 responses.
⭐ Patrón 1 — "prefiero X a Y" (I prefer X to Y)
The comparison pattern for preferir always uses the preposition a (to/over), never que.
- Prefiero el rock a la música clásica. — I prefer rock to classical music.
- Prefiero las series a los concursos. — I prefer series to quiz shows.
⭐ Patrón 2 — "me parece + adjetivo" (I find it...)
Use me parece with a singular subject and me parecen with a plural subject. The adjective must also agree in gender and number with the subject that follows.
- Me parece muy emocionante. — I find it very exciting.
- Me parece bastante aburrido. — I find it quite boring.
- Me parecen interesantes. — I find them interesting. (note plural verb AND plural adjective)
⭐ Patrón 3 — "trata de" (it is about)
Use trata de to describe the content or plot of a film or TV series. This is the natural, idiomatic Spanish equivalent of "it's about..." — far more natural than attempting a direct translation.
- La película trata de un grupo de amigos en Madrid. — The film is about a group of friends in Madrid.
- La serie trata de la vida de una familia española. — The series is about the life of a Spanish family.
💡 AQA Paper 4 Writing tip — use all three in one paragraph
AQA Paper 4 (Writing) rewards variety of opinion expression. Instead of just me gusta and no me gusta, use: prefiero X a Y, me parece + adj, and me gustaría + inf — three distinct patterns in one paragraph. For example: Prefiero las series a los concursos porque me parecen más interesantes. Me gustaría ver más documentales en el futuro.
