🎧 Dictation Strategy — Paper 1
AQA Paper 1 (Listening) includes a dictation section where you hear a sentence and must write it exactly. Three plays are standard. Use each play for a specific purpose.
Play 1 — Understand
- Listen for meaning, not spelling.
- Note key words you recognise — verb, topic, person.
- Do not write anything yet. Let the whole sentence land first.
Play 2 — Fill
- Write what you hear, phonetically if needed.
- Apply SSC rules as you write: /yamo/ → llamo; /xente/ → gente; /acer/ → hacer (remember the silent h).
- Mark b/v words you are unsure about — come back in Play 3.
Play 3 — Check
- Check accents: question words need accents (¿qué? ¿cómo? ¿dónde?); preterite endings need accents (hablé, habló).
- Check silent-h words: hola, hablar, hacer, hay, historia — the h is there even though you cannot hear it.
- Decide b or v from grammar and context: voy (going), bien (well), vivir vs beber.
