• One vowel = one sound, always. In AQA listening papers, Spanish speakers hold each vowel flat. If you hear an English-style glide (like /əʊ/ for o), you are hearing something that doesn't exist in native Spanish. Trust the pure vowel — do not chase glides into wrong letters.
• ie and ue diphthongs count as ONE syllable. quiero = 2 syllables (quie-ro), not 3. In the 2026+ AQA speaking paper, syllable count affects which form you choose for stem-changing verbs — if you treat quiero as 3 syllables, you may misidentify the stem.
• que/qui and gue/gui — the u is silent. Never pronounce the u in porque, quiero, guitarra, guerra, llegué. If you hear a /w/ sound in these combinations, it signals the word uses ü (diaeresis): vergüenza.
• ü (diaeresis) = the u IS pronounced. If you see two dots over the u, break the silent-u rule and say /w/: ver-gü-en-za. The diaeresis is meaning-critical — missing it in writing (e.g. writing verguenza) counts as a spelling error under AO3.
• Written accent = hiatus. día has an accent on í specifically to prevent the i+a from merging into one syllable. Reading it as one syllable (/dja/) is incorrect. In dictation tasks, hearing dí-a as two distinct sounds is a reliable signal that the word contains a broken diphthong — check for a possible written accent.
