🔇 La u muda — The Silent U Rules
In two common letter combinations, the u is not pronounced.
Rule 1: qu + e/i → u is silent
- que = /ke/ — porque = /porke/ — quiero = /kjero/ — quien = /kjen/
qu in Spanish always gives a /k/ sound. There is no /kw/ sound written as 'qu'.
Rule 2: gu + e/i → u is silent
- guerra = /gera/ — guitarra = /gitara/ — llegué = /yege/
The u is inserted to keep the g hard before e/i — without it, g + e/i gives the /x/ sound (like 'j' in jamón).
⚠️ Exception — ü (diaeresis): u IS pronounced
When u carries two dots (diaeresis), it breaks the silent-u rule:
vergüenza = /bergwenza/ — the ü is fully pronounced as /w/
