- Where are tropical rainforests mainly found?
- Around the equator.
Tropical rainforests grow in a band roughly 10Β° north and south of the equator β the region geographers call the equatorial belt. The Amazon Basin in South America is the world's largest, covering around 5.5 million kmΒ². The Congo Basin in central Africa is the second largest. Smaller rainforests exist in South-East As

COLD β Rainforest Characteristics:
- C β Climate: hot (26β28Β°C) and wet (2,000 mm+) all year round
- O β Organisation: four distinct layers (emergent, canopy, understorey, forest floor)
- L β Life: extraordinary biodiversity β 10% of all species on Earth
- D β Dependence: deep interdependence β remove one component and the system unravels
SLIMEH β Deforestation Causes:
- S β Soya farming (world's largest exporter, $33bn/year, 25 million hectares)
- L β Logging (80% illegal; mahogany, teak; logging roads bring further deforestation)
- I β Indigenous displacement (poverty and landlessness β smallholder slash-and-burn)
- M β Mining (Serra Pelada gold rush; CarajΓ‘s iron ore; garimpo mercury pollution)
- E β Energy (Belo Monte Dam β 500 kmΒ² flooded, 20,000 people displaced)
- H β Highways and ranching (Trans-Amazonian Highway; BR-163; cattle = 70% of clearing)
The 2004β2012 number pair to remember: Brazil cut deforestation from 27,772 kmΒ² (2004) to 4,571 kmΒ² (2012). An easy way to hold this: "almost 28,000 down to under 5,000 β an 83% reduction." This single data point is the foundation of any management evaluation question.
The tipping point: At 20β25% deforestation, the Amazon may convert irreversibly to savanna. The current level is approximately 17%. We are close. This is why scientists describe the situation as urgent β we are 3β8 percentage points from a point of no return.
Visual association β The Chain: Picture the Amazon as a chain connecting three links: (1) forest trees β (2) water vapour in the sky β (3) rainfall on SΓ£o Paulo's farms and reservoirs. When the forest disappears, link 1 breaks. No vapour = no rain = SΓ£o Paulo drought. That chain is why rainforest protection is not just an ecological issue β it is a water security issue for 22 million people in one city alone.
