Sentence 1

Mi hermano vive en Madrid y trabaja en una tienda.

My brother lives in Madrid and works in a shop.

  • hermano — silent h; never write "ermano"
  • vive — b/v merger: this verb is written with v, not b
  • trabaja — b/v again: this verb uses b, not v; both sound identical

Sentence 2

El año pasado, fui al cine con mi familia.

Last year, I went to the cinema with my family.

  • año — ñ is essential; "ano" is a completely different word
  • pasado — full -ado ending in writing, even if you hear reduction in speech
  • fui — irregular preterite of ir/ser; no accent needed (monosyllable)
  • cine — Castilian: hear /θine/; write cine with c, not s

Sentence 3

Ayer comió una pizza porque tenía mucha hambre.

Yesterday he/she ate a pizza because he/she was very hungry.

  • comió — preterite 3rd person: accent on final is mandatory
  • tenía — imperfect 3rd person: accent on is mandatory
  • hambre — silent h; "ambre" or "jambre" are both wrong and both cost a mark

Quick recall flashcards

Accents change meaning in Spanish. Give TWO pairs of examples.
canto (I sing, present) ≠ cantó (he/she sang, preterite) esta (this) ≠ está (is/he/she is) Missing the accent on cantó would cost you a mark — the spelling is wrong without it.
How do you write ñ (eñe) correctly, and why does it matter?
ñ = the letter n with a tilde (~) on top. It is a completely different letter from n. año (year) ≠ ano (anus) — a very embarrassing error! mañana (tomorrow/morning) · español (Spanish) · señor (Mr) On an exam paper, write the tilde clearly above the n. Never substitute 'ny' or 'ni'.
